How movement helps reduce inflammation in midlife, and why consistency matters most..

Inflammation is often blamed on ageing, but research is increasingly showing that it’s more about lifestyle than years lived.
Experts such as gastroenterologist Dr Will Bulsiewicz highlight that inflammation isn’t something we “switch off” with one food, diet, supplement or detox. Instead, it’s influenced daily by how we move, eat, sleep and manage stress.
One of the most powerful, and overlooked, tools?...Regular movement.
Why movement matters
Consistent, moderate exercise helps the body regulate inflammation by:
Improving circulation and oxygen delivery
Lowering chronic inflammatory markers
Supporting blood sugar balance
Calming the nervous system
This is especially important in midlife, where stress, hormonal changes and reduced activity can all contribute to low-grade inflammation.
The key is consistency, not intensity.
The gut–inflammation connection (in simple terms)
The gut plays a major role in immune health. When gut health is supported, inflammation is easier to regulate.
Helpful habits include:
Eating a fibre-rich diet (vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains)
Moving daily to support digestion
Prioritising sleep
Reducing chronic stress where possible
No extremes required, just realistic, repeatable habits.
Why strength, mobility and balance matter
Movement that feels safe and achievable helps the nervous system relax. When the body feels safe, it’s better able to repair, adapt and recover.
Strength training protects muscles and bones. Mobility supports joints and circulation. Balance work supports coordination and confidence
Together, these elements support long-term health and reduced inflammation.
