Why Your Workouts Need to Change After 50 (And What Actually Works Instead)

Can we have a little chat about exercise in midlife?

Have you ever found yourself thinking…

“Why doesn’t this feel like it used to?”“I used to be able to do this no problem…”“Why am I so tired after that?”

You’re not imagining it, and you’re not doing anything wrong.

But the reality is…your body isn’t the same as it was in your 20s, and that’s not a bad thing. It just means we need to approach exercise a little differently now.

And when you do? You can feel stronger, more energised and more in control than you have in years.

Why Working Out Over 50 Feels Different

Back in our 20s and even 30s, we could get away with quite a lot:

  • Random workouts with no real plan

  • Going all in after doing nothing for weeks

  • Ignoring aches and niggles

  • Thinking “no pain, no gain” was the goal

Fast forward to midlife, and that same approach often leads to:

  • Achy joints

  • Low energy

  • Frustration with lack of results

  • Feeling like exercise is harder than it should be

This is where so many women think: “Maybe I just can’t do what I used to anymore.”

But that’s not the full picture.

How Exercise Should Change After 50

The biggest shift?

👉 Moving from intensity-based exercise to consistency-based training

Your body now responds far better to:

  • Regular, manageable workouts instead of all-or-nothing efforts

  • Progressive strength training rather than random sessions

  • Mobility and balance work alongside strength

  • Recovery and rest as part of the plan (not an afterthought)

This isn’t about doing less.

👉 It’s about doing what actually works for your body now

Why Strength Training Is Essential for Women Over 50

This is the part that often gets overlooked, and it’s so important.

From midlife onwards, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass (a process known as sarcopenia).

And this can affect far more than just how we look.

Strength training helps to:

  • Maintain and build muscle

  • Support bone density (reducing osteoporosis risk)

  • Improve balance and coordination

  • Boost metabolism and energy levels

  • Make everyday tasks feel easier

So when we talk about strength training for women over 50, it’s not about getting bulky.

👉 It’s about staying capable, functional, confident and independent

Why Motivation Isn’t the Problem

This is something I see all the time.

Women saying:

  • “I just need to get my motivation back”

  • “I know what I should be doing…”

  • “I just can’t seem to stick to it”

But in reality…

👉 Motivation is unreliable, especially in midlife

Between work, family, hormones, sleep (or lack of it!), and everything else life throws at you…of course motivation dips.

It’s not a discipline issue.

👉 It’s a structure issue

When you have:

  • Short, effective workouts

  • A clear plan to follow

  • Something that fits into your life

That’s when exercise becomes something you just do, like brushing your teeth.

The Real Secret: Consistency Over Perfection

If there’s one thing I’d want every woman over 50 to understand, it’s this:

👉 You don’t need to do more.👉 You don’t need to do it perfectly.👉 You just need to do it consistently

Because small, regular sessions:

  • Build strength safely

  • Improve mobility over time

  • Support long-term health

  • And most importantly… feel achievable

And when something feels achievable, you’re far more likely to keep going.

A Smarter Way to Exercise in Midlife

This is exactly why I created Flexpress.

Not for the 25-year-old version of you. But for the version of you now.

The one who wants to:

  • Feel stronger

  • Move more freely

  • Have more energy

  • Stay independent and active for years to come

Without:

  • Overdoing it

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Or wondering if you’re doing the right thing

Final Thoughts

If things haven’t been working the way they used to…

It’s not because your body is failing you.

👉 It’s because no one has shown you how to work with it at this stage of life.

And once you do?

Everything starts to feel that little bit easier again.

If this resonated with you, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

I’m here to help you every step of the way.

Alison 💛
